The Quarry

About this project

The Quarry is a joint venture between Anderson Group and L&Q, aimed at delivering a mix of affordable and private housing, including 870 homes and a new primary school.

BDC was appointed as the structural engineering consultant for this technically complex development, which won the “Best Large Development” award at the First Time Buyer Readers’ Awards 2022.

The project features a combination of houses and low-rise apartment blocks built over semi-basements on the site of a former hillside quarry, where the soil had been disturbed up to 30 meters below the current ground level.

BDC collaborated closely with civil and geotechnical consultants to develop an engineering solution that would avoid the need to export soil from the site, aligning with the goals of the Circular Economy Statement.

To eliminate the need for deep piling, the soils were dynamically compacted after being cleaned. Working alongside the geotechnical engineer, BDC designed the buildings to be supported by raft foundations, placed directly on the re-engineered ground. This innovative approach helped ensure a cost-effective and sustainable solution for the project.
