Rochester Riverside School
About this project
Year: 2023
The new primary school at Rochester Riverside has been designed as a two-form entry institution, accommodating 420 students from nursery through Year 6. Managed by the Pilgrim Multi-Academy Trust, the school features modern classrooms, outdoor teaching spaces, and recreational facilities.
This two-story building incorporates a raised deck, directly accessible from nursery and reception classrooms, to enhance outdoor learning opportunities. The school grounds are thoughtfully planned, including a grassed sports area with an exercise trail and a multi-use games area. This versatile space can accommodate two netball courts or a seven-a-side football pitch, promoting physical activity and well-being.
During construction, BDC was tasked with evaluating the feasibility of using cherry pickers on one-story terraces for cladding installation on upper floors. The assessment revealed inadequate thermal break support at reinforced concrete wall cores along terrace edges. The solution involved implementing a repair scheme with new mini piles, reinforced concrete ground beams and brick piers for additional structural support and to reduce balcony deflection.
Additionally, BDC prepared construction drawings and a methodology statement for a new staircase and an extended ramp connecting classroom areas to the playground. Close coordination with the site team ensured the ramp’s precision and functionality, overcoming initial construction challenges.
