About this project

Kent Institute of Medicine & Surgery is a new private hospital adjacent to the M20 in Maidstone comprising a leading-edge imaging department, cardiology, ultrasound and critical care theatres and wards providing cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, gynaecology, orthopaedics, oncology, and diagnostics – including angiography, advanced MRI, and nuclear medicine.

BDC’s engineers provided civil and structural engineering services for the hospital and construction of a new roundabout on Bearstead Road and access road for the wider development. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems were developed with a combination of swales, infiltration basin and ponds holding the surface water run off before discharging into the adjacent watercourse.

BDC’s civil engineers worked with the architect and landscape consultant to engineer the building into the side of the existing hillside while maintaining accessibility and providing service and maintenance access to all areas of the facility.

BDC’s structural engineers worked closely with the client, contractor, architect, MEP engineer, vibration consultants and specialist medical suppliers to review the structural options and develop the detailed design.

A dynamic assessment was undertaken on the structure to ensure that dynamic response to vibrations from footfall and the adjacent motorway did not compromise the performance of the specialist imaging equipment.

The design also included the development of an innovative lightweight entrance canopy formed with ETFE Air Filled Pillows supported on a laminated timber frame.
